Internship: Java Team: Android Studio plugin @ Guardsquare in Leuven (BE)

In our Leuven-based Java team we work on manipulating Java bytecode. All our software is based on our open source bytecode manipulation library ProGuardCORE ( https://github.com/Guardsquare/proguard-core ).
On top of ProguardCORE we mainly develop 2 different products: ProGuard and DexGuard. ProGuard is a shrinker and optimizer for all Java and Android applications, it makes them smaller and faster. DexGuard is a code hardening tool, which makes Android apps harder to understand for a reverse engineer.

Project:

Android Studio is the official integrated development environment (IDE) for Android mobile development. It’s built on JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA. Both Android Studio and IntelliJ IDEA are open-source and extensible with plugins.

There are many existing plugins that help developers be more productive. The goal of this internship would be to build a plugin that can help developers be more productive when writing ProGuard / R8 rules.

ProGuard rules are the de facto standard for configuring ProGuard, R8 and DexGuard. Guardsquare already provides an online tool to help developers visualize keep rules (ProGuard Playground) but this is disconnected from the IDE where the developers normally edit the keep rules.

The ProGuard Playground Android Studio Plugin should bring the capabilities of the ProGuard Playground to the IDE.

Profile:

• Experience with Java or Kotlin
• Experience with Android Studio or IntelliJ-based IDEs
